Realistic goals?

Quick post - maybe I will post more later. Another 5 miles this morning, was hard to get going, but finished strong - had a great conversation with Sara which kept me going.

So I have been giving thought to what my goal time for the Philly half should be? I would like to run it sub-2:00, which translates into 9:09 miles. I ran a 5-miler on Sunday in 42:11. Is that a realistic goal. Any help in trying to pace the miles would certainly be appreciated.

The race will have pace groups which might help. My last two races (13.1 and 18) I tried running comfortably the first half and pushing it the second half. It was a huge boost psychologically to have energy and to pass people in the later miles. The other theory is to start fast and to hold on at the end (which always hurts).

First of all, as I keep saying, it's 9:09. (That pace will get you to the finish in 1:59:52.)

Second, you can definitely do it. There are many race predictors out there, based on various formulas. See here or here. Just looking at these two sites, your predicted time for a half marathon is about 1:57.

In terms of pacing, I'm like ShoreTurtle and generally like to start slow and speed up. I can usually guage by how I'm feeling - but I get the sense this isn't one of your strengths! Consider starting with 9:15 miles, and gradually speeding up. You could probably get to about 8:30 miles by the end.

(How's that for a comment? I suppose I could have told you this in person...)

Q - it was a good run in the end - though it started out slow - i could go for another 5 now, kinda feel like i need it - but i think i will hold off for the tempo tomorrow

ST and Danny gave you the best advice already. Sub 2:00 sounds good. Don't spend too much energy weaving through the crowd during the first mile. Keep your head up and your eyes looking ahead. When its all over remember how much fun it was!
